119 :: Missing person report
Mariam was nearly home when she got the notice.
Management required. Give estimated arrival.
Mariam did not update her route. She gave a time. Three thirty. Twenty five minutes time. It was the same time if she had been at home finishing her lunch. Or taking a bath. Or if she had been at the shop needing to take her groceries home before going to the office. Her time was the soonest. She was given the job. The other managers on call were told. She was thirty five minutes. She apologised. If she had said thirty five minutes she would not have been called. Another manager had said thirty minutes. Thirty minutes is what managers usually say when they have nothing on.
Trevor was waiting for her in reception. He was chatting to an immigration officer. A young officer still on probation. A young officer with an engaging smile and an infectious laugh. They were alone. The other immigration officers were in the staff room. There had been no arrivals since twelve thirty.
Sorry. A little later than I thought. (Mariam)
Oh. I did not even notice. Sorry Shiloh. I have to get back to work. (Trevor)
I am on my way home anyway. My shift has finished. (Shiloh)
Later. (Trevor)
Bye then. (Shiloh)
Mariam nodded goodbye.
Right then. Sorry to say we have a missing resident. The last time we have her on ping was two yesterday. WE have been a bit rushed. A cook and two cleaners off sick. We only did a physical check when her ping whent red. So she may have been gone for anything up to twenty four hours. (Trevor)
Sure. I will pick it up from yesterday then. I can take it from here. I will not keep you any longer. (Mariam)
Thanks. Once again I am sorry it took us so long to do the check. I hope you will give me the heads up when you find out how she got out. I know my team. I would like to be able to prepare them if any action needs to be taken. (Trevor)
Of course. The main aim is to ensure we provide the expected service. Our investigation is not to find a scapegoat. (Mariam)
Thank you. I appreciate it. (Trevor)
Sure. (Mariam)
Mariam first went to the staff room. She told the nightshift officers she was investigating a missing inmate. She went to her office. She started playback from when the transport brought Naomi to Tinsley House. She set playback to track Naomi. She opened a new window to track each person who had contact with Naomi. It was standard procedure. The transport officer. Her fellow illegal migrants. The migration officer interviewing her. Hank. She recorded Hank pausing the interview. She recorded his wanking to Naomi’s sex tape. She recorded Hank giving Naomi her iPass. She recorded the message he had written on the iPass. She back tracked to Hank getting Naomi’s things. She started a face recognition on Hank’s trace. She tracked three staff members in Tinsley. She tracked fifteen residents. She visually confirmed all fifteen were still on the premises. She ran a contacts history for the fifteen with Naomi. No matches. She went back to Hank. She recorded his movements. Home. Pub. She recorded his argument with his wife. She created a folder. Added the playback. Added the transcripts. She made a police request. Potential flight risk. Potential criminal activity. The police responded. Twenty four hours.
Mariam completed her report. Evidence Hank had provided information leading to an abscondment. Circumstantial evidence of Hank’s motive. No evidence of Hank providing assistance. No evidence of contact with abscondee. Report suggestion to bring Hank in. To give him the opportunity to bring Naomi back in. To track and record all his action s until Naomi is returned. To initial online search.
Mariam completed the paperwork she had in her car. She worked methodically for two hours. Closed her computer. Went home.
