020 :: A letter home

Dear Sister

I woke this morning feeling so comfortable.  More comfortable than I have ever felt in my life.  I think.  My bed is luxurious.  Opulent, even.  I am so happy here.   I know you said not to write, and I may never forget the look on your face when I turned to go through customs.  The sadness when you realised I would not change my mind.  I cried silent tears all the way to London.   Imagining you standing waiting for me to change my mind.  Waiting for me to turn and run back to our life.  But you know, you really know, this was the only way I could get out.  I already know I will have everything I need here so I can send back all the money I earn.  It will help.

It is a funny thing, when I got here I mistook the other au pair for the master.  Can you imagine, they have two au pairs.  His name is Peter.  So, I have a guide to starting my new career.  He first showed me a small room and I thought it was the entire flat.  I cried out with joy when he showed me the rest.  Truly palatial with the Thames at the end of the garden.  Such a beautiful big garden, you would enjoy cultivating only the finest vegetables in its virgin soil.  An upper garden for the masters.  A middle garden which will be perfect for vegetables.  A lower garden for enjoying the river.   The neighbour grows vegetables.  You would love it.  Can you imagine this tiny paradise in the centre of London?

The best discovery is the work is not as you feared.  Cooking, cleaning and catering.  Just like in Tianjin but here they are better behaved.  A better class of people.  No stray fingers.  No rough dirty stray hands groping and poking like back home.  All I need to do is keep myself trim and conditioned.  Eye candy, as they say.

I imagine this letter finds you accepting my choice.  Please forgive me for leaving.

Always,

The Au Pair
Set in a dystopian near future, an au pair...
